WebM to text

A .webm file is a video file that carries the audio, and Transcrib Si takes it as it is: 120 minutes per file. Most of the time nobody wanted the video, only the talking that came with it. Screen recorders and meeting recorders write WebM by default, so the speech lands buried inside the file.

Good news: the transcription only listens to the sound, so the picture is ignored completely. .webm is on the accepted list, one file runs up to 64 MB and 120 minutes, and you get the text back with timestamps and speaker labels.

What is inside, and why the file is big

WebM is Google's container for VP8 and VP9 video with Opus audio, and it became the default output format for browsers, screen recorders and conference software because it is open and efficient. The video part is usually the reason a .webm file is heavy: a screen recording of an hour is a lot of frames.

None of that matters for transcription, but the size limit does, and this is where .webm users hit a wall. Video bytes eat into the 64 MB allowance quickly, so a long recording often breaks the limit while the speech itself would have fitted easily. The workaround is simple: extract or record the audio track alone and send that, or cut the recording into shorter parts. The guide to long recordings has the details.

From a screen recording to a paragraph

The uploader below reads the sound track and ignores the rest.

  1. Save the recording

Whatever produced the .webm — a meeting recorder, a browser, a screen capture tool — will happily hand the file over. Keep it where you can reach it from a browser.

  2. Send it as it is, or send only the sound

If the file is comfortably under 64 MB, send it whole. If it is heavy because of the picture, save the audio track next to it and send that instead — the transcript is identical and the upload is much faster.

  3. Fix the names, export the result

Speaker splitting marks who said what. The text can be corrected in the editor and then downloaded as TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT, CSV or DOCX.

The price of one .webm file

Paying by the length of the recording, not by the container and not by the picture. The video track is never charged for — only the minutes of sound you send.

FAQ

Questions this page answers.

Do I have to remove the video track first?

Only if the file is too heavy for the 64 MB limit. The service ignores the picture completely, so sending a whole .webm works fine as long as the size fits; a video with the sound track pulled out is simply smaller and faster to upload.

Does the transcription follow the picture?

No. What comes out is a transcript: the words that were spoken, in order, with a timestamp on every line and a speaker label when you ask for one. It is not a description of the screen and it does not note what happened visually.

My .webm recording is longer than two hours. What now?

Cut it into parts and upload them one after another, or save only the sound track and send that. Two hours and 64 MB are hard limits on every plan, paid ones included, and they exist because the gateway cannot take more.

Can I get subtitles for the video as well?

Yes — export SRT or VTT and place it next to the .webm file. The subtitle timings come from the same timestamps as the transcript, so the captions and the text agree with each other.

Which formats do you accept besides .webm?

mp3, wav, m4a, mp4, webm, ogg, flac, aac, wma and mov. The general guide walks through what each one is good for, and the MP4 page covers the other common video container.
