OGG to text

An .ogg file is usually Opus audio inside an Ogg container, and Transcrib Si takes it without a conversion: 120 minutes per file. Xiph.Org built the wrapper for Vorbis, and a chat app records a voice note, encodes it with Opus and stores it inside an .ogg file. The extension stops most desktop players from opening it.

What you need to know: .ogg sits on the list of accepted containers together with mp3, wav, m4a, mp4, webm, flac, aac, wma and mov. One file per upload, 64 MB and 120 minutes at the most, and the transcript comes back with timestamps, speaker labels and six export formats.

Ogg, Opus and the .opus file

Two names get mixed up here, and the difference matters when a file arrives with the wrong extension. Ogg is the container: a box that holds compressed audio. Opus is the compression method that usually fills the box. A file called .opus is, in practice, an Ogg container carrying Opus audio — the extension is a convention, not a different format.

Our upload form accepts the .ogg extension, and an .opus file opens in any player that understands the container inside it. If your recorder names files .opus, rename the copy to .ogg before sending it — the contents stay exactly the same, only the label changes.

Read an .ogg recording in three moves

No converter, no desktop player, no account for the first three files.

  1. Get the file off the messenger

Voice notes live inside chat apps, so save them to a folder on your computer first. The saved file keeps the .ogg extension, which is the easiest case.

  2. Choose the language, or let it work it out

The uploader below has a language selector that can stay on automatic detection. Add speaker splitting when the recording contains more than one voice and you want to know who said what.

  3. Take the text where you need it

Download the result as plain text, as a subtitle file, as a spreadsheet or as a Word document. The speaker labels stay in place in every format, and the timestamps let you jump back to the exact second in the recording.

What an .ogg transcription costs

The container does not change the price — the length of the recording does. An .ogg file of twenty minutes costs the same as a .wav file of twenty minutes.

Transcrib Si plans and limits for an OGG file
PlanPriceAllowanceExports
Free$03 files a day, 30 minutes per file, 64 MBTXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT, CSV
Pro, yearly$10 per month, $120 for the year1,500 minutes of audio each calendar monthAll of the above plus DOCX
Pro, monthly$20 per month1,500 minutes of audio each calendar monthAll of the above plus DOCX

Ogg files are small, so the 64 MB ceiling rarely gets in the way. The limit that bites first is the two-hour rule on a single recording, and the long recording guide covers what to do when a single file grows past it.

FAQ

Questions this page answers.

Does the service accept .opus files?

The accepted list names .ogg rather than .opus. The two names point at the same kind of file, so rename the copy to .ogg and send it — no re-encoding, no quality loss, and the contents are byte for byte the same.

Why does my .ogg file not play in the usual player?

Most desktop players handle Vorbis inside Ogg, but a bare Opus stream is a different story and some of them simply refuse it. That is a property of the player, not of your recording. The uploader reads the file directly, so playback is not part of the path at all.

Can I transcribe a whole folder of voice notes at once?

One file per upload, and the free plan allows 3 files a day. The Pro plan counts minutes per calendar month instead, so a hundred short voice notes are fine as long as the total stays inside 1,500 minutes for the month. Larger batches are worth a conversation about the Team plan.

Are the exported subtitles usable for a video?

Yes. SRT and VTT are on the export list for every plan, and the timestamps are the same ones you see in the editor. Put the file next to the video and the captions line up with the sound.

What happens to my .ogg file after the transcription?

The privacy policy describes the whole route: which files are processed, where, and how long anything is kept. You can also delete a transcript and its file yourself from the app, and the security page describes the handling in short form.
