In short

A video file is transcribed from its sound track: drop an mp4, webm or mov and the words come back one segment per line, with the times. One file is up to 30 minutes; the free plan is $0 with 3 files a day.

The case

Why a picture is not needed for a transcript

A video carries two things at once, and a transcript needs only one of them. The engine listens to the sound track and writes down what was said; the picture is never described, and nothing is written back into the file. That is also why a long recording still fits, as long as the file stays under 30 minutes.

How it works

How to turn a video file into text

  1. 1

Drop the video on the widget

The widget takes audio and video: mp4, webm or mov from a camera, mp3, wav or m4a from a recorder. A file is up to 30 minutes, on every plan.

  2. 2

    Say who is talking

Leave the language on automatic detection or pick 99+ languages, and switch on the split by speaker when the camera moves from one person to another.

  3. 3

Take text or subtitles from it

The same file gives a transcript for reading, a Word document for the editor, or a subtitle file for the player. Six formats are one click apart in the app.

Tips

  • Send the original file; converting it only loses quality.

  • A big picture costs nothing; a long sound track costs time.

  • Export VTT for a web player and SRT for an editor.

Questions this page answers

Does the transcript describe what is on screen?

No. Only the sound is read: the words, the moments they start and end, and the speakers. Nothing about the picture goes into the text, and your file is never changed.

What if the video is longer than 30 minutes?

Then it has to be split before the upload. The limit of up to 30 minutes belongs to one file, and a file over the limit is refused with a clear message.

Can one video give both a transcript and subtitles?

Yes, and the timings are the same in both. SRT and VTT carry the start and the end of every segment, so the subtitle file follows the speech exactly.

Is it free to try with a video?

Yes: $0, 3 files a day, up to 30 minutes each and no card. The paid plan is $10 a month when you pay yearly, and it carries no minute limit of audio a month.
