In short

Upload the M4A and get the words as text: a line per segment with a timecode, the speakers named on request, TXT, SRT, VTT or CSV to export and DOCX on Pro. The file is up to 30 minutes, the free plan $0 with 3 files a day.

How it works

How to transcribe an M4A recording

  1. 1

    Take the recording as saved

Open the voice memo app or the recorder and keep the original file. Renaming an extension changes nothing inside, and the audio inside is what gets transcribed.

  2. 2

Upload it and pick the language

Drop the file on the widget above.Rthe recording language is detected automatically.

  3. 3

Fix the names, take the file away

Every line has the start time and the end time. Correct a name in the app and export plain text, Markdown, SRT, VTT or CSV on any plan, and DOCX on the Pro plan.

The case

The file the phone already wrote

The voice memo on an iPhone is an M4A file, and so is a good deal of audio that travels between phones, laptops and messengers. The container is MPEG-4 and the sound inside is usually AAC, the codec designed as the successor to MP3 and generally better at the same bit rate. None of that has to be converted before the upload.

Tips

  • Keep the file from the phone; do not export it twice.

  • Ask for the speaker split before a call with two people.

  • Export SRT if the recording is going into a video.

  • The free plan allows 3 files a day without a card.

Questions this page answers

Is M4A better than MP3 for a transcript?

For the file, yes: AAC was designed as the successor of MP3 and generally holds more of the sound at the same bit rate, Wikipedia says. For the transcript, we have not measured accuracy per format, so we publish no percentage.

What if my M4A has no extension?

The name of the file is not what is transcribed, the audio stream inside is. Keep the file as the recorder wrote it, and the transcript is made from the same sound.

Can one M4A hold a long meeting?

Not in one piece. A file is up to 30 minutes on every plan, so a longer recording is cut and uploaded as separate files.

Are the words translated?

No, a transcription is the words that were spoken, in the language they were spoken in.9the recording language is detected automatically.
