In short

Reddit keeps the video of a post on its own host, and the file of it is what the widget above takes. The speech comes back as text, one line per segment, with the time of every line. One file holds up to 30 minutes.

How it works

How to transcribe a Reddit video

  1. 1

Open the video of the post

The video of a post is played in the app and on the site. The «Save» in the menu of the post is not a download: it puts the post into the list of your saved posts in the account.

  2. 2

Take the file of the video

In the app the menu of the video holds «Save video» for the videos that Reddit hosts itself. What the menu offers depends on the version of the app and on where the video is hosted.

  3. 3

Check the sound of the file

On the desktop the picture and the voice come as two separate streams, and the browser saves the picture without the voice. Play the file before the upload: a video without a sound gives an empty transcript.

  4. 4

    Upload and export

Put the video on the widget above and leave the language on automatic detection. The export carries the seconds of every line: SRT for subtitles under the video, CSV for a table of the segments.

The case

Why the answer under a post needs a text

The answer under a post is often spoken, not written: the video of a question is also the video of the answer, and it takes half an hour of watching to find the minute where it is given. A text of the same file lets you find that minute by a word.

Tips

  • Play the file before the upload and listen to the first seconds.

  • Quote a short part of the post and name the author.

  • Export SRT to make a clip of the answer.

  • Keep the link to the post next to the file: the date of it matters.

Questions this page answers

Is the sound of the video saved with the picture?

Not always. On the desktop the picture and the audio come as two separate streams, and the browser may write the picture alone. The file of the app keeps the sound.

What does the Save button under a post do?

It puts the post in your account, in the list of the saved posts, where you can come back to it later. Nothing is downloaded to the disk by that button.

Can I transcribe a video of another author?

A post belongs to its author and the recording to the people in it. Take the file for your own use, quote a short part in your own words and do not republish the video of somebody else.

How long may one file be?

up to 30 minutes, on every plan. A longer video is cut into parts before the upload, and every part carries its own timecodes.
