In short

A clip of Spotlight is a short video with a voice in it, and a transcript holds that voice. Put the file on the widget above and the speech comes back as text, one line per segment, with the time of every line. One file holds 30 minutes.

How it works

How to transcribe a Snapchat clip

  1. 1

    Save your own clip

Press and hold the clip while you are looking at it and choose «Save in Chat». What happens next is set in the app: Memories, the camera roll or both of them.

  2. 2

Take the file of the clip

A snap saved in the chat is kept on the servers of Snapchat, and from there it is exported to the camera roll of the phone. The file of the clip is what goes on the widget.

  3. 3

    Know what is not there

Snapchat has no button for saving the clip of another author, and only a public post can be read. A screenshot of a private snap is reported to the sender.

  4. 4

    Upload and export

Put the clip on the widget above and leave the language on automatic detection. A clip of a minute is a small file. The export shows the second of every line: TXT for the words, SRT for the video.

The case

Why a clip needs a text

A clip of Spotlight is short and the words in it are quick: the sense of a sentence often sits in the last three seconds, and the text drawn on the screen is not spoken at all. A transcript keeps the voice and leaves the picture out.

Tips

  • Check in the settings where your snaps are saved.

  • A transcript of the voice, not of the text on the screen.

  • Name the file with the name of the author.

  • Export SRT to put the words under the video of the author.

Questions this page answers

Can I save a clip of somebody else?

Snapchat gives no button for that. The share arrow gives a link to the public post, and the file has to be taken from the app or from a recording of the screen.

What about the text written on the clip?

A transcript holds the speech only. The words drawn on the video are a picture and they stay in the frame; a subtitle file that repeats them is written by hand.

Does Snapchat know that I saved the clip?

Snapchat reports a screenshot or a recording of the screen of a private snap and of a message in a chat. For a public post the sender is not told.

How long may one file be?

up to 30 minutes, on every plan. A clip is far below that, and a recording of the screen of a long stream is cut into parts.
