AMR to text

Transcribe an AMR file to text

Transcribe an AMR file to text: the speech codec of the mobile phone becomes a line per segment with timecodes and speaker labels. Free $0, 3 files a day.

3 files a day up to 30 minutes, free99+ languagesSpeaker separation and timestamps
In short

Upload the AMR and get the text: one line per segment, a timecode on every line, speakers named on request. AMR is the speech codec of the mobile phone. The free plan is $0 with 3 files a day, one file is up to 30 minutes.

How it works

How to transcribe an AMR file

  1. 1

    Upload the .amr file

Phone recorders, dictation apps and older handsets write this format. The file is read as it is, and the speech inside it is what gets transcribed.

  2. 2

Set the language and the split

Rthe recording language is detected automatically. The result is one line per segment with a timecode.

  3. 3

    Export the transcript

Every line keeps the time it starts and ends. Take the text away as TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT or CSV, or as DOCX on the Pro plan.

Formats

What you get

  • TXT

Plain text for an email, a note or a chat

  • SRT

Subtitles for video editors and platforms

  • VTT

Subtitles for a browser and a website

  • CSV

    A table: time, speaker, text

  • DOCX

A Word document with speakers and times

  • Markdown

    Text with headings for notes

The format

What an AMR file is, and how small it is

The codec

a multi-rate narrowband speech codec, taken as the standard by 3GPP in October 1999 and used in GSM and UMTS

The bit rates

eight of them, from 4.75 to 12.2 kbit/s, in frames of 20 milliseconds at a sampling rate of 8 kHz

The band

speech only: 200 to 3400 Hz, which is the width of a telephone line

The file

the extension is .amr; the 3GP container carries the same codec for mobile use

The case

Why a phone codec is worth transcribing

AMR is the codec of the mobile phone: 3GPP took it as the standard speech codec for GSM and UMTS, and the recorder in an older handset writes it out as.amr. It is built for speech alone, in the narrow band of 200 to 3400 Hz, at one of eight bit rates from 4.75 to 12.2 kbit/s. The file is small; the limits on one upload are the same as for any other file, up to 30 minutes.

Tips

  • An AMR file is small, so a whole call fits in one upload.

  • Switch the split on when two voices share the line.

  • Read the opening minute before you export.

  • Export plain text for the archive.

Questions this page answers

What does an AMR file hold?

Speech, and only speech: the codec is tuned for the 200 to 3400 Hz band of a telephone line, at one of eight bit rates from 4.75 to 12.2 kbit/s, in frames of 20 milliseconds.

Is AMR good enough to transcribe?

AMR was built for intelligible speech rather than for music, so a phone recording carries the words of the call. We have not measured the accuracy of a transcript on AMR files, so we publish no percentage for this format.

Why do my phone recordings come as AMR?

It saves space, and the network was built for it: 3GPP adopted the codec for GSM and UMTS, so every call of those networks could carry it. The file extension is .amr.

Can I send several AMR files at once?

One file per upload. The free plan allows 3 files a day of up to 30 minutes each, and a single file is up to 30 minutes.
