Facebook video to text
Facebook video to text: upload the video from Facebook and get the text of it with a timecode on every segment, the speakers on request, and TXT, SRT, VTT, CSV or DOCX out. Free $0, 3 files a day.
The file of Facebook is all the service needs: our own transcription engine turns it into a text with a timecode on every segment. One file may be up to 30 minutes, and the speakers are told apart on request.
How to get the file and turn it into text
- 1
Open the Reels
Open your profile, go to the Reels of it and find the video of the live broadcast.
- 2
Press Download video
Open the video in the full screen view and press the Download video button.
- 3
Find the Live tab
On a Page the live broadcasts are in the Videos tab, and on the web they are in the Live tab.
- 4
Read the first lines before you share them
The engine keeps the time of every segment, so a correction in the editor does not move anything else. Read the beginning and the names before the file goes out.
- 5
Send the file to the engine
Drop the file on the widget above, or pick it from the device. Set the language, switch the speaker split on when more than one person talks, and send.
What comes back from the engine
- TXT
One segment per line, the way a person wrote it down. It is the format to paste into a ticket, a chat or a document.
- TXT, CSV
The start and the end time of every segment, and the speakers named separately when you ask for it.
- SRT, VTT
SRT and VTT with the time of every line, so the recording can carry its own subtitles.
- Markdown, DOCX
The transcript is edited through the API and exported as Markdown for a wiki, or as DOCX for a review.
What Facebook keeps, and what it gives
- Where the file is
You can download your Facebook live videos to your computer after the stream has ended, if you have not deleted the video.
- What the file is
A live video can be downloaded one by one from a profile, from a Page or from Meta Business Suite.
- What can go wrong
A new live broadcast can be replayed, downloaded or shared for 30 days, and after the notice about the old ones you have 90 days to take them.
- Length of one file
up to 30 minutes on the free plan, no minute limit on Pro
- Free plan
$0: 3 files a day, up to 30 minutes per file, no card
- Pro plan
$10 a month when you pay yearly ($120 a year), or $20 a month
What the recording does not give you
Meetings end in files. the video from Facebook sits on a laptop or in a cloud folder, and the work that follows, the minutes, the list of actions, the quote for the customer, waits for a person with an hour and a half. Our own transcription engine reads the file once and gives the text back with the timecodes in place, so the minutes are written from the recording and not from memory.
Tips
Turn on the split by speaker when more than two people talk.
Take CSV when the text of the Facebook file has to go into a spreadsheet.
A headset microphone gives a cleaner text than the one of the room.
The limit is 30 minutes on the free plan, and the Pro plan has no minute limit.
Questions about Facebook files
Is a link to Facebook enough to get a transcript?
A link is not enough. The file has to be on your device, and only then the engine can read it. The steps above say how the file leaves Facebook.
Why is there no Facebook file in my folder?
Because the recording is kept by the platform and not by your device. A cloud recording stays in the web portal of Facebook until somebody takes it down.
What about the transcript Facebook already made?
A transcript of the platform is a help and not a source. Send the recording itself: the engine hears the whole file, marks the speakers and keeps the times.
The download button of Facebook is grey. Why?
Because the owner of the recording switched the downloads off, or because the plan of the account does not include them. The permission is the one of Facebook.
