In short

Send the reel from Instagram to the engine and read it as text. A file may be up to 30 minutes, the export comes in six formats, and DOCX is part of the Pro plan. Three files a day are free.

How it works

How to get the file and turn it into text

  1. 1

    Open the reel

Open the reel that you want to save and press Next on it.

  2. 2

    Save it to the phone

Swipe up to edit, swipe left to right and press Save at the bottom: the reel goes to the camera roll of the phone.

  3. 3

    Mind the music

Downloading the reel will not save the music that you added from the music library of Instagram.

  4. 4

    Wait for the transcript

Our own measurement on a short file was 0.84 s. A long recording goes through a queue and is saved to your account, so the text is there when you come back for it.

  5. 5

Read the first lines before you share them

The engine keeps the time of every segment, so a correction in the editor does not move anything else. Read the beginning and the names before the file goes out.

The result

What comes back from the engine

  • TXT

One segment per line, the way a person wrote it down. It is the format to paste into a ticket, a chat or a document.

  • TXT, CSV

The start and the end time of every segment, and the speakers named separately when you ask for it.

  • SRT, VTT

SRT and VTT with the time of every line, so the recording can carry its own subtitles.

  • Markdown, DOCX

The transcript is edited through the API and exported as Markdown for a wiki, or as DOCX for a review.

The facts

What Instagram keeps, and what it gives

Where the file is

A reel of your own account is saved on the device, and a saved draft is not available from another device.

What the file is

Downloading a reel does not save the music that was added from the music library of Instagram.

What can go wrong

Whether a reel can be downloaded depends on the settings of the author of it.

Length of one file

up to 30 minutes on the free plan, no minute limit on Pro

Free plan

$0: 3 files a day, up to 30 minutes per file, no card

Pro plan

$10 a month when you pay yearly ($120 a year), or $20 a month

The case

What the recording does not give you

Two things are worth knowing before you start. First, the service takes a file and not the address of a page: the reel from Instagram has to reach the disk first, and the steps above say how. Second, a transcript is only as good as the sound, and a headset microphone and the microphone of a room give two very different texts out of the same engine.

Tips

  • Do not guess the language: a wrong setting shows up in the names.

  • Turn on the split by speaker when more than two people talk.

  • Take CSV when the text of the Instagram file has to go into a spreadsheet.

  • A headset microphone gives a cleaner text than the one of the room.

Questions about Instagram files

Does the Instagram file keep working after the download?

On your device, yes: the file you took down is yours. What may change is the copy of Instagram, because a cloud recording can be deleted by its owner.

Can the Instagram recording become subtitles?

Yes. SRT and VTT come out of the same file, with the time of every line, and that is the format a player of a video needs.

The Instagram file is in a language I do not read.

99+ languages are read, ru and en. Set the language in the widget or leave it on automatic detection, and the text comes back in that language.

Does the service open an Instagram link for me?

No. The engine takes a file, not the address of a page. Take the reel from Instagram off Instagram first, with the steps above, and send the file itself.
