In short

Upload the video from Vimeo and our own transcription engine returns the text of it. One file may be up to 30 minutes. The export comes as TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT or CSV, and as DOCX on Pro.

How it works

How to get the file and turn it into text

  1. 1

Open the page of the video

The video is opened on vimeo.com, where the file can be taken; the embedded player does not work for it.

  2. 2

    Press Download

The Download button under the player gives the file of the video when the owner of the video allowed it.

  3. 3

Mind the life of the link

A link of the API lives 24 hours, so the file is better taken while the link is fresh.

  4. 4

Send the file to the engine

Drop the file on the widget above, or pick it from the device. Set the language, switch the speaker split on when more than one person talks, and send.

  5. 5

Read it, fix a name, export

The text comes back one segment per line, with the start and the end time of every piece. Fix a name in the editor and export TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT, CSV or DOCX.

The result

What comes back from the engine

  • TXT

One segment per line, the way a person wrote it down. It is the format to paste into a ticket, a chat or a document.

  • TXT, CSV

The start and the end time of every segment, and the speakers named separately when you ask for it.

  • SRT, VTT

SRT and VTT with the time of every line, so the recording can carry its own subtitles.

  • Markdown, DOCX

The transcript is edited through the API and exported as Markdown for a wiki, or as DOCX for a review.

The facts

What Vimeo keeps, and what it gives

Where the file is

A viewer can take a video only from the page of it on vimeo.com: the embedded player never gives the file.

What the file is

The file is the video of the player in the quality that the owner of the video allowed.

What can go wrong

When the owner switched the Downloads switch off under Share and in the viewer permissions, there is no Download button for the viewers.

What usually fails

The owner of the video sees the Download button anyway, whatever the setting of the downloads is.

What to watch out for

A direct link of the API is short-lived: the download field gives links that are valid for 24 hours.

Length of one file

up to 30 minutes on the free plan, no minute limit on Pro

Free plan

$0: 3 files a day, up to 30 minutes per file, no card

Pro plan

$10 a month when you pay yearly ($120 a year), or $20 a month

The case

What the recording does not give you

Two things are worth knowing before you start. First, the service takes a file and not the address of a page: the video from Vimeo has to reach the disk first, and the steps above say how. Second, a transcript is only as good as the sound, and a headset microphone and the microphone of a room give two very different texts out of the same engine.

Tips

  • DOCX is the format for a review or a hand-off, and it comes with Pro.

  • Ask for the file of the audio track and not of the video, when you can.

  • Over 30 minutes on the free plan a file has to be cut before the upload; Pro has no minute limit.

  • Give the file the name of the meeting, so it is findable a month later.

Questions about Vimeo files

The Vimeo file came empty. What now?

A muted recording, or a file taken before the platform had finished writing it, comes empty. Take it down again after a pause and check that the sound is in the file.

Is a link to Vimeo enough to get a transcript?

A link is not enough. The file has to be on your device, and only then the engine can read it. The steps above say how the file leaves Vimeo.

Why is there no Vimeo file in my folder?

Because the recording is kept by the platform and not by your device. A cloud recording stays in the web portal of Vimeo until somebody takes it down.

What about the transcript Vimeo already made?

A transcript of the platform is a help and not a source. Send the recording itself: the engine hears the whole file, marks the speakers and keeps the times.
