In short

Upload the recording of the lesson and it comes back written out, with the time of every line, so you can read the words you missed and listen to that second again. One file is up to 30 minutes; the free plan is $0.

The case

The word you did not catch, and the fourth time you hear it

Listening is the hard part of a language, because the ear has to catch a word that arrives at the speed of a conversation. The eye is faster. Read the same sentence while you listen to it and the gap closes: the word you missed is on the line, and the timecode takes you back to the exact second where it was said, so you hear it again without hunting for it.

How it works

How to transcribe a lesson for practice

  1. 1

Take the audio of the lesson

A podcast, a video or a recording of the class. One file may be up to 30 minutes.

  2. 2

Upload it and set the language

Drop the file into the widget above, choose the language of the recording or leave it on automatic detection.

  3. 3

Read the line and listen again

Open the recording at the timecode of the line and hear the sentence with the text in front of you.

  4. 4

Keep the file as a word list

Export TXT or Markdown for the words you did not know, and SRT or VTT when the lesson is a video.

Tips

  • Listen once without the text, then once with it.

  • Pick one minute a day instead of an hour at the weekend.

  • Name the file after the lesson, so the texts stay in order.

  • Export SRT when the lesson is a video you watch again.

Questions this page answers

Which languages can be transcribed?

99+ languages, the 99+ languages of the engine. Set the language in the widget or leave it on automatic detection.

Does the text keep the accent of the speaker?

The text is written as it was spoken, in ordinary spelling. A strong accent does not change the words, but the pronunciation is not written in phonetics.

Can I use it with the subtitles of a video?

Yes. Export SRT or VTT and the file has the start and the end time of every line, so the text follows the picture.

How long is the transcript kept?

Until you delete it in the app. On the free plan the transcript is kept for 7 days, and nothing is sold.
