Transcribe a MOV file to text
Transcribe a MOV file to text: the sound of the QuickTime container becomes a line per segment with timecodes and speaker labels. Free $0, 3 files a day.
Upload the MOV and get the text: one line per segment with a timecode, speakers named on request. A MOV is a box of tracks; only the sound track is read. The free plan is $0 with 3 files a day, one file is up to 30 minutes.
How to transcribe a MOV file
- 1
Look at what the MOV holds
The file may carry a picture, a sound track and a cover image. The upload takes the file as it is; the engine works on the audio and leaves the rest alone.
- 2
Set the language and the voices
Pick 99+ languages, or let the engine detect it. Two speakers in the recording? Turn the split on and the lines are attributed separately.
- 3
Export in the shape the job needs
Plain text for the archive, SRT or VTT for a video, CSV for a sheet of segments, DOCX for an editor on the Pro plan.
What you get
- TXT
Plain text for an email, a note or a chat
- SRT
Subtitles for video editors and platforms
- VTT
Subtitles for a browser and a website
- CSV
A table: time, speaker, text
- DOCX
A Word document with speakers and times
- Markdown
Text with headings for notes
What a MOV file is, and what one upload may weigh
- The container
the QuickTime file format: one or more tracks, kept in a hierarchy of atoms, built for editing in place
- The relation to MP4
both containers can carry the same MPEG-4 media; the QuickTime format was the basis of the MP4 specification
- The sound track
the sound inside the file is what is transcribed; the picture is left alone
- Export
TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT, CSV and DOCX (DOCX is a Pro feature)
Why a box of tracks is easy to read
A MOV file is a box of tracks, and the QuickTime format behind it was built for editing in place: video, sound and metadata sit in a hierarchy of atoms. Cameras, editors and phones all write it. A transcript needs one thing out of that box, the sound, and the service reads the sound track and leaves the picture alone.
Tips
Send the original file from the camera.
A MOV from an editor often carries several tracks.
Split a long recording by topic, not by length.
Export CSV when the times have to go into a sheet.
Questions this page answers
Is a MOV different from an MP4?
Only in the wrapper. Both containers can carry the same MPEG-4 media, and the QuickTime format was the basis of the MP4 specification. The transcript is built from the audio in either case.
Can one MOV hold several sound tracks?
Yes, a MOV holds one or more tracks, and QuickTime added multichannel audio with version 7. Send the file as it is; the transcript is made from the sound inside it.
Will the video end up in the transcript?
No. The engine reads the sound and writes the words down with the times. Nothing is added to the picture, and nothing is written back into the file.
What if the file is too big?
One upload is up to 30 minutes, on every plan. Cut the recording into parts and send them one by one; the free plan still allows 3 files a day.
