In short

Here is the whole path: take the call recording from iPhone, send the file to the widget on this page, and the text comes back one segment per line. The free plan is $0 and gives 3 files a day.

How it works

How to get the file and turn it into text

  1. 1

    Record the call

Call Recording in the Phone app starts the recording and puts it into Call Recordings inside Notes.

  2. 2

    Save the audio

The Save Audio Files setting keeps the recording in the app, where it can be shared out of it.

  3. 3

    Mind the notice

Both people hear that the call is recorded, so the recording is a matter of agreement between them.

  4. 4

    Wait for the transcript

Our own measurement on a short file was 0.84 s. A long recording goes through a queue and is saved to your account, so the text is there when you come back for it.

  5. 5

Read the first lines before you share them

The engine keeps the time of every segment, so a correction in the editor does not move anything else. Read the beginning and the names before the file goes out.

The result

What comes back from the engine

  • TXT

One segment per line, the way a person wrote it down. It is the format to paste into a ticket, a chat or a document.

  • TXT, CSV

The start and the end time of every segment, and the speakers named separately when you ask for it.

  • SRT, VTT

SRT and VTT with the time of every line, so the recording can carry its own subtitles.

  • Markdown, DOCX

The transcript is edited through the API and exported as Markdown for a wiki, or as DOCX for a review.

The facts

What iPhone keeps, and what it gives

Where the file is

A call is recorded in the Phone app, in the Call Recording section of the call, and the file is kept in Call Recordings inside the Notes app.

What the file is

The recording is an audio file, and the Save Audio Files setting keeps it in the app.

What can go wrong

Both people on the call hear a notice that the call is being recorded.

What usually fails

Call recording is available only in some countries and in some languages.

Length of one file

up to 30 minutes on the free plan, no minute limit on Pro

Free plan

$0: 3 files a day, up to 30 minutes per file, no card

Pro plan

$10 a month when you pay yearly ($120 a year), or $20 a month

The case

What the recording does not give you

Meetings end in files. the call recording sits on a laptop or in a cloud folder, and the work that follows, the minutes, the list of actions, the quote for the customer, waits for a person with an hour and a half. Our own transcription engine reads the file once and gives the text back with the timecodes in place, so the minutes are written from the recording and not from memory.

Tips

  • Over 30 minutes on the free plan a file has to be cut before the upload; Pro has no minute limit.

  • Give the file the name of the meeting, so it is findable a month later.

  • If the recording mixes ru and en, choose the language of the talk.

  • Give the speakers their names in the editor, one time, and export again.

Questions about iPhone files

The names in the iPhone transcript are wrong.

A name is only as good as the sound of it. Turn on the split by speaker, give the speakers their names in the editor and export again: the times stay as they were.

Why is there no field for an iPhone link on this page?

Because the address of a page is not a file, and a file is what the engine reads. The steps above take the call recording out of iPhone and say what to do with it after that.

Where does the iPhone recording wait?

It depends on the platform, and the table above names the place for this case: a folder on the device, a tab of the web portal or a folder on a drive.

Does the file need a special format?

No. The engine reads the file the way the platform made it: MP4, MP3, M4A, WAV and the other formats of the recorders are all taken. Nothing has to be converted first.
