In short

Upload the episode of the podcast and our own transcription engine returns the text of it. One file may be up to 30 minutes. The export comes as TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT or CSV, and as DOCX on Pro.

How it works

How to get the file and turn it into text

  1. 1

    Download the episode

In the Podcasts app open the episode and press Download under it.

  2. 2

    Pick the quality

The app can save the episode in a higher or in a lower quality, and the choice changes the size of the file.

  3. 3

    Mind the default

By default the app downloads the audio of the episode, and not the video of it.

  4. 4

Read the first lines before you share them

The engine keeps the time of every segment, so a correction in the editor does not move anything else. Read the beginning and the names before the file goes out.

  5. 5

Send the file to the engine

Drop the file on the widget above, or pick it from the device. Set the language, switch the speaker split on when more than one person talks, and send.

The result

What comes back from the engine

  • TXT

One segment per line, the way a person wrote it down. It is the format to paste into a ticket, a chat or a document.

  • TXT, CSV

The start and the end time of every segment, and the speakers named separately when you ask for it.

  • SRT, VTT

SRT and VTT with the time of every line, so the recording can carry its own subtitles.

  • Markdown, DOCX

The transcript is edited through the API and exported as Markdown for a wiki, or as DOCX for a review.

The facts

What Podcasts keeps, and what it gives

Where the file is

The episode is downloaded in the Podcasts app: the Download button under the episode itself.

What the file is

The downloaded episode is an MP3 file, and the app can offer it in a higher or in a lower quality.

What can go wrong

By default the app takes the audio of the episode, not the video of it.

Length of one file

up to 30 minutes on the free plan, no minute limit on Pro

Free plan

$0: 3 files a day, up to 30 minutes per file, no card

Pro plan

$10 a month when you pay yearly ($120 a year), or $20 a month

The case

What the recording does not give you

A Podcasts file is already on your disk, and it already holds the whole meeting. What it does not hold is a text you can search, quote or hand over. A recording cannot be skimmed, and a recording that is played again from the start is a recording nobody has. Our own engine reads the file once, keeps the time of every sentence and hands the episode of the podcast back as a document you can work with.

Tips

  • The audio track is smaller than the video of the same recording.

  • Check the length before you send it: the free plan takes files of 30 minutes; Pro has no minute limit.

  • Rename the file before you send it: the name of the meeting travels with it.

  • Do not guess the language: a wrong setting shows up in the names.

Questions about Podcasts files

Could the service fetch the file from Podcasts itself?

Not today. The upload widget accepts files only, and no account of ours sits inside Podcasts. The table above says where the file waits.

How long does the Podcasts file stay where it is?

That is the rule of Podcasts and not ours. Take the file as soon as you have it, because a cloud recording can be removed by the platform or by the owner of the account.

Which file should I take when Podcasts offers several?

The audio is the smaller one, and the engine reads audio. If the platform gives you both a video and an audio track, the audio is the one to send here.

Can I transcribe a Podcasts recording that is not mine?

Only if you have the right to listen to it and the right to keep a copy of it. The engine reads what you send, but the right to record comes from the owner of the account.
