The case

The sworn words of a room with one microphone

A deposition is a question and an answer, over and over, in front of a reporter and under an oath. What matters in it is not the topic but the words: the pause before the answer, the correction in the middle of the sentence, the answer that gives less than the question asked. The transcript keeps all of it in text with a timecode on every line, which is what a lawyer needs when the memory of the room is not enough.

How it works

How to transcribe a deposition

  1. 1

Get the recording of the deposition

One file may be up to 30 minutes, so a long sitting has to be split into two recordings.

  2. 2

Upload it and separate the voices

Send the file to the widget above, leave the language on automatic detection and switch on the split by speaker.

  3. 3

    Find the answer that matters

Search the text for the name or the date and read the lines around it, with the timecode of the moment it was said.

  4. 4

Put the text into the case

Export TXT to read, Markdown for the working notes, DOCX on Pro for the document that goes to the other side.

Tips

  • Keep the recording of every sitting of the deposition.

  • Name the file after the case and the date of the sitting.

  • Read the first minutes: the name and the oath are said there.

  • Export DOCX on Pro for the document of the case.

Questions this page answers

Is this a certified deposition transcript?

No. A certified transcript is made and signed by a court reporter; what this service returns is the text of the recording with timecodes, for your own work.

Can the question and the answer be told apart?

Yes. With the split by speaker on, each voice gets a label of its own, so an answer never runs into the next question.

Does the service check what was sworn?

No. It transcribes the words of the room. Whether they were sworn, and what they mean for the case, is the work of the lawyer.

How long is the transcript kept?

Until you delete it in the app. On the free plan the transcript is kept for 7 days, and a deleted file leaves the live system at once.
