MOV video to text

A MOV file is accepted as a video upload: the picture is ignored and the sound is written down. Every line carries the second it starts and the second it ends, so the text can be lined up with the picture. One file is up to 64 MB and 120 minutes, the free plan is $0.

What the service takes from a MOV

Only the sound. The service is a transcription service, not a video editor: the picture is never described, never stored and never sent anywhere else, and the file itself is left untouched on your disk. What comes back is text — the words that were said, in the order they were said, with the timing to match the picture.

MOV sits in the accept list of the upload field next to mp4 and webm, which are the other two video containers named there. The general guide lists all ten containers the site takes.

A video file is usually the heaviest of the lot

A picture costs bytes, and bytes are what the 64 MB rule counts. A MOV of an hour can be heavy even when the sound in it is small, so the usual answer for video is not a smaller file but a smaller part of it: cut the recording into pieces and send them one after another. The guide to long recordings has the arithmetic and the chunked upload for scripts.

Speakers on a video recording

A filmed conversation is a multi-speaker conversation, and the speaker labels are what make such a transcript readable afterwards. Switch on “Split by speaker” and each line is marked with the voice it belongs to. The speaker labels page compares how seven services do this, and the meeting guide walks through the workflow of a filmed meeting.

Where the file is read

Sound in Russian is processed on our own transcription infrastructure, which is outside the United States. A file that is entirely in English can be passed to a third-party cloud speech provider in the United States when that fallback is enabled on the server. The audio is used to produce the transcript and to run the service; it is never sold and never used to train models for other customers. Deleting the transcript in the app removes the file too, and it leaves the live system immediately and the encrypted backups within 30 days.

Two languages. Russian and English are the ones the engine recognizes, and a recording that mixes them is handled as a mix. Set the language yourself or leave it on automatic detection.

When to send the sound instead of the video

  • The picture is not needed. Extract the sound into an audio file first and the upload becomes a fraction of the size.
  • The video is over 64 MB. Cut it into parts, or export the audio and upload that.
  • There is no speech in it. A music video or a silent clip produces an empty transcript; the service reports what it found.
  • You want subtitles. The SRT and VTT exports carry the timecodes, so they drop onto the video as a subtitle track.

Other containers

The upload field names mp3, wav, m4a, mp4, webm, ogg, flac, aac, wma and mov. The same pipeline reads all of them, so a MOV and an MP3 of the same conversation give the same text. The guide to a video on the web shows the same three steps for a recording you found online.

FAQ

Questions this page answers.

Is MOV in the list of accepted formats?

Yes. The upload field of the site names mov among the ten containers it accepts, and a video file is read as a video upload with the sound transcribed.

Do you describe what happens in the picture?

No. The service transcribes sound. The picture is ignored, nothing about it is written down, and the transcript contains the words and the timecodes only.

How large may the video be?

64 MB per file on every plan, and up to 120 minutes of sound on Pro and Team. A video that is over the limit should be cut into parts or reduced to its audio track.

Can I make subtitles out of the transcript?

Yes. The SRT and VTT exports keep the timecodes, so the text drops onto the video as a subtitle track in the usual players.

Who can see my video file?

The file stays in your account until you delete it. The audio is used to produce the transcript and to run the service, it is never sold and never used to train models for other customers.
