In short

A voice message in Viber is an audio file, and the words of it come back from the widget above as one line per segment, with the time of every line. One file holds up to 30 minutes, and the free plan is $0.

How it works

How to transcribe a Viber voice message

  1. 1

Open the chat with the message

Hold the voice message in the chat and the menu comes up with «Forward» and «Share». What the menu holds depends on the version of the app and on whether the message is still in the chat.

  2. 2

    Save the audio file

Forward the message to yourself or to a chat where you can keep files. On a phone the menu holds «Save to device», and the file that arrives is an audio file of the message.

  3. 3

    Upload it on the page

Put the audio on the widget above and leave the language on automatic detection. The engine reads 99+ languages, and it picks the language of the file on its own.

  4. 4

    Export the words

The result is a line per segment with the second it starts at. Export TXT to paste the words somewhere, SRT to put them under a clip, or CSV to keep the time and the voice.

The case

Why a voice message needs a text

A voice message is the shortest recording in a chat and the hardest one to keep: it cannot be searched, it cannot be pasted into a document, and it is gone with the chat. A text of the same message makes the sentence something you can find again in a second.

Tips

  • Forward the message to yourself before the chat is cleared.

  • Keep the date of the message in the name of the file.

  • Listen to the first seconds of the file before the upload.

  • Export SRT when the words go back into the clip.

Questions this page answers

Can Viber show the words of a voice message?

In some versions of the app My notes keeps the voice notes and shows their text. The languages it covers depend on the version, so the answer is not the same on every phone.

How do I get the audio file out of the chat?

Hold the message and choose «Forward» or «Share»; on a phone the menu holds «Save to device» as well. There is no separate button for a download, and the message of another person may not be saved at all.

What if the message is short?

A voice message is often under a minute, so it is a small file and one upload is enough. The limit of one file is up to 30 minutes on the free plan, no minute limit on Pro.

Does the transcript keep who spoke?

One voice message is one speaker, so the question does not arise. When the recording holds several voices, switch on the separation of the speakers and the export names them.
